SALT LAKE KAYAKING

The easiest way to paddle is leisurely downstream. Now what if you could paddle downstream traveling both directions! On our Salt Lake Kayaking adventure, we follow the tides so you’ll never have to fight the current. A 15-minute ride will take us to the “put in” spot on the river, and with the incoming tides, paddling upriver to the great Salt Lake is easy. Simply let the gentle ocean currents be your guide. We’ll arrive at the island’s largest salt lake, where exploration of the tranquil beauty is compulsory. Your guides will entertain with legends of the area and tales of the Fijian god of the ocean, who guards the lake entrance. As the tide turns, we “go with the flow,” heading down river toward the ocean. Once there, a van awaits, ready to take you home to your resort the Koro Sun.

PEARL FARM TOUR

Savusavu Bay, home of Fiji’s most prestigious pearl farm, J. Hunter Pearls Fiji, offers visitors to our shores the unique opportunity to experience the day to day working of a modern day pearl farm and the intricate processes behind culturing pearls.

Founded in 1999 by local marine biologist and visionary Justin Hunter, these gems of the sea are world renown for their truly unique colour spectrum of earthy tones such as cranberry, chocolate, gold, and pistachio. Coined “the world’s rarest pearls” J. Hunter Pearls can be found in select high end boutiques and galleries throughout Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and are featured each year at the worlds most premiere luxury watch and jewellery show Baselworld.

The success of this Fijian pearl farm is due to the special characteristics of the Fijian pearl oyster, the pristine and nutrient rich waters in which they are farmed and lastly the special partnership that have evolved over time between man and nature. Central to the J. Hunter ethos is the practice of sustainable farming, as pearl farmer Justin Hunter insists, “beautiful high quality pearls can only be produced if the environment and water conditions are of the highest quality, and this means we must ensure and protect the diverse marine eco-system we farm in.”

Farm tours run daily from Monday to Friday, with two annual harvests over April/May and September/October. During these months guests have the added bonus of observing the highly experienced pearl technicians seeding oysters and the exciting moment of the pearl being extracted from its host oyster.

A recent addition to the tour is the opportunity to snorkel over the J. Hunter’s giant clam broodstock reserve. Giant clams are the largest and heaviest living bivalve mollusk in the world and are today listed as a vulnerable species due to over exploitation. The giant clam reserve has 4 different species and is a protected area allowing these beautiful underwater heavy weights to grow and reproduce.

The tour ends in the J. Hunter showroom, where guests can view and purchase loose pearls of all grades, shapes and sizes along with J. Hunter’s exclusive pearl and mother-of-pearl shell jewellery collections.

Tours: Monday – Friday, 8 guests max, 2 guests min.

Duration & Cost: Farm tour only, $40FJD/person (Dur. 1.5 hours). Tour and snorkeling, $60FJD/person (Dur. 2hours. *Please note snorkeling is dependent on weather conditions and guests must bring own gear.) Children $30FJD/person.
